Walking Sticks
Walking sticks are a useful accessory item that can be used by anyone, just about anywhere. There are simple sticks and there are fancy sticks. The simplest is just that, a raw stick that you pick up in the woods and usually use for walking through the rough territory in the woods or mountains. Fancy walking sticks can be carved, curved, or made of clear plastic that can be filled with mementos.
The best walking stick I ever used was one that I bought for $6 at a summer steam engine show. It was hand carved blonde wood, and was slightly spiraled in design. It had a little hole near the head where a small leather loop had been inserted. When I put the loop over my wrist, it made it easier to carry the stick and not drop it. Since the show was on a dirt fairgrounds that was an uneven surface, walking was much easier. At the time, I was having hip pain from arthritis, and this helped on that day, and for the next year or so until I actually did have surgical hip replacement. The stick was a little long for my height, but I never did cut it down and it worked fine. I added a standard rubber tip, as the wood could be very slippery on wet or smooth surfaces. I still have the stick, although I no longer need to use it. ey can really give you some support when you are trying to get across a rough or rocky area, like having a third support leg. The added bonus for carrying walking sticks is that you also have a strong defensive weapon that can go anywhere with you.
